Temescal Brewing
Temescal Brewing is a brewery in Oakland, CA that’s known for a light and playful take on beer and hospitality.
We were approached to design a flexible package design system that could keep up with their rapid-release schedule of beer cans.
It quickly became apparent that a more robust design system was needed; so we got to collaborating on a design system that is broad, flexible, easy to use, and effortless to expand upon.

Inspiration
The team had a deep love for the Memphis design movement, and had already incorporated elements of it into their beautiful space. This served as an incredibly fun starting point for our design system.
Through conversations, the idea of a “quilted” can design arose—multiple patterns enveloping the can. A new branded kit of parts was needed to achieve this.
Building the brand system
A can design “quilted” with dozens of patterns required a solid underlying grid structure to control the chaos.
A simple grid with two rigid content zones (branding on the front and content on the back), served as the base for a flexible top layer where patterns could live.
Variety needed to be balanced with a cohesive brand system, so a limited, six-color palette was introduced, as well as two typefaces that family together perfectly in a quirky, dissonant way.
Rounding out the system, a collection of 50 brand patterns was created to allow for endless play and combination across packaging, merch, and a host of other brand applications.

Can launch
The new design system launched with six new beer flavors. Along with the cans, we designed a series of short “canimations” for social media, as well as a new collection of merch.
